What a quacking day it was
What a quacking day it was. Over 500 yellow rubber duckies racing down Tralee’s well know Canal. The event was organised by 5, enthusiastic, driven Transition Year students from St. Mary’s CBS The Green Tralee.
On the day there was a terrific atmosphere boosted by the great entertainment that was on show. 2 Teen Bands Jousting With Chairs and Raise It Down, African Drumming (Drum Dance Ireland) and Teen Spirit Tralee. We managed to raise a whopping €3,000 for Jigsaw Kerry.
The idea came up when we saw an ad of the O2 Think Big programme and we knew that it would be a great opportunity of using a Rubber Duck Race to raise awareness of Youth Mental Health and funds for a local service Jigsaw Kerry in Tralee.
Jigsaw Kerry provide free and confidential Mental Health supports for young people between the ages of 12-25 in Kerry. They also provide presentations and talks to local schools and colleges, organisations and community groups on Youth Mental Health.
Secondary schools have a unique role to play in supporting the positive mental health and well-being of young people and CBS The Green is no different. CBS The Green do this by creating a caring environment between all the students and staff, by educating the students about their mental health in the classroom and by also providing support for those experiencing difficulty.
We at Duck-a-Thon feel that being able to help young people of our own age who might be going through difficulties is a great personal achievement in our own personal development.
This is the first of many events that we will be organising. We are currently planning an event to be held during the summer period. In the meantime Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and please visit the Jigsaw Kerry website www.jigsaw.ie/kerry
And remember – Quack Quack to Happiness.
